My husband and I had a quick trip to wine country and just stayed one night at Xanadu ranch. We loved it! It’s a great place to base oneself for southern Arizona wine country. It’s funky in a comfortable, appealing way and the owner was super friendly and helpful. We will come back and bring a few of our daughters next time. The area has a unique beauty and it is an appealing place to slow down.

We had a fabulous time staying at the bunkhouse. Unfortunately we were only there for a short time so we will definitely come back to visit. The stars at night and sunset were amazing. Very convenient to visiting some great wineries. And we loved the fact that we could bring our dog. Highly recommend!

Karen and Bernie were lovely hosts. The views from the ranch are amazing, especially after getting some monsoon rain. The ranch is very close to the town of Sonoita, and to the wineries in Sonoita and Elgin. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Dear Karen and Bernie,  1-28-12
Just wanted you to know that our stay with you last week was exactly what we had hoped it would be.
The bunk house and front porch was terrific and perfect for Luke and I after 8 hours roaming the land. We know Chance felt the same way, having a bit of freedom to wander about.
What a great location and sure beats having to stay in a Hotel!
Hopefully we can make it back next year. We will be surely be watching the weather over the course of spring and summer.
Sincerely,
Steve and Luke

Hello Bernie & Karen,  3-1-11

Just a little note to thank you both for your hospitality. We loved staying in bunkhouse #4 looking out the patio door enjoying the wide open countryside. Hear are a couple pictures of us on our all day ride and what a beautiful day it was. We also enjoyed the wine tour with Renee driving us around to the wineries. This was my first wine tasting trip and I got to learn a lot about wine tasting. Hopefully we will be back soon to go riding again and visit the rest of the wineries we didn't have time for.
Thank you again... we had a really good time,
Warmest Regards,

Hi Karen~

Leslie and I so enjoyed our stay at Xanadu and meeting you, Bernie, Jake and the three moons! We also appreciated your sharing your experiences and information about the area. The more I saw, the more I liked it!!!
Upon leaving we drove around Sonoita and Elgin and then stopped by to see Carol Ford. She was great -- sincere, direct, knowledgeable, patient. I will definitely be back in touch with her. We went down to Patagonia Lake for a picnic lunch and stopped at Global Arts, Red Mountain Foods and some of the other Patagonia shops on our return to Phoenix -- we were impressed. Thank you again for being so helpful and making us feel so at home. Looking forward to seeing you again.

I would like to have bunk 4 over the thanksgiving holidaty if possible. It might just be me and my dog, and it might be me, my daughter and one of hter friends. I can bring my own horse, but do you have horses for others if I bring them? Can you accomodate groups of people who want to have a weekend away to do some possible emotional work with the horses senses guiding them. '
Regardless of your answer I would love to know more about what you do. I think you just might be living my dream.  10-3-10

Hey Guys,   8-4-10
I wanted to right to tell you how much we enjoyed our anniversary "getaway" at the Xanadu Ranch. The Bunk house was private and perfect especially the views of the horses in the pasture. The proximity to the vineyards made our trip to the Harvest Wine festival a quick but scenic drive. We did enjoy BBQing by the Koi Pond and watching the amazing sunset over the mountains. Too bad it rained cats and dogs the night we arrived. I hope to visit with you again in the future.

Sep 7, 2010  We live in Tucson which is desert (although beautiful; very little grass). It is wonderful to know there is a place less than two hours away which is cooler and really green! This is a twenty (20) acre ranch. As such, you are completely surrounded by quiet and nature. The horses are so friendly they eat out of your hand. It feels totally safe here; we slept with the windows and sliding door open all night. The bunkhouse was very clean with a very nicely equipped kitchen; dishes, utensils, coffee, tea, fridge, microwave, etc. Perfect for cooking a meal if we'd stayed more than one night. There were also lots of snacks available at very reasonable prices. The owners, Karen and Bernie, could not be more accommodating. The wine-tasting in Sonoita was so much fun. The wines were way better than we thought they'd be; we bought three bottles. We ate at the Steakout Restaurant and had a very good meal. We rode our Harley here; great scenery. Will definitely do this trip again!  Rewlie

Jun 8, 2010  Karen and Bernie are wonderful hosts. Great place to relieve your stress and relax. The hammock and Koi pond are very relaxing and the views of the mountains amazing. Very centrally located to all the wineries and the 2-3 restaurants in Sonoita. You can also visit Tombstone, Patagonia, Nogales and Tubac from here. They are all about an hour away. Make sure to visit the Kief-Joshua vineyard. This would be a gret place for a small family reunion. The casita is very nice as well as the other two rooms. The casita has a full kitchen. The bunk house was also very nice.

Hi Karen and Bernie

Thanks for the photo. We had a lovely stay with you and only wish it could have been longer. We will certainly recommend to anyone who is travelling to your part of the world.

Cave Creek was cold, but as we spent most of our time in Conference it wasn't too much of a problem.

The journey back to South Africa was really tiring and it took us a couple of days to re-acclimatise. We have lovely memories of our holiday and especially our stay at the ranch.

All the best for the future.

A short note to thank you both so much for a delightful mini-vacation. The casita is so homey and comfortable and I loved the kitchen even though I refused to cook anything except coffee. You made us feel so comfortable and I look forward to another stay before too much time passes. We both fell in love with the whole area and Sonoita is so laid back and quiet. Reminds me of where I grew up.

Karen, I think I told you how badly I needed to leave my every-day life and pain behind for a few days. I don't remember shedding one single tear the whole time we were at Xanadu. Maybe I am finally healing.

I am sure the success of your guest ranch is due to the charm and hospitality of its host and hostess, and again we thank you so much for a lovely time.

Just a note to let you know that we made it home without any problems. The wind was not as bad as it could have been and there was no dirt blowing across the roads at all. It took us just exactly 3 hours so the traffic as we neared Phoenix was moving right along. I hope you got all your errands done (especially the nails!) and made it home safely.
We both want to thank you for the special vacation we had at your beautiful place. The scenery and trails were spectacular and the conversations and laughter were really a lot of fun. We hope to make it back in a few months to see your area at another time of the year and do more riding.

The dogs and Rio had a great time also. Apologize to Jake for our grumpy hound. We are working on changing his attitude so that he doesn't feel so defensive. But, we all have our issues that are caused by our past experiences. Ha! Bernie, thank you so much for letting me borrow your gaited horse bit. I am going to order one as soon as I have a few minutes to find one online. Also for riding with Rio and I to show us around and help with some fine tuning for his gaiting. Stayed first time On: 8/2009

We have had two great stays at Xanadu. First in a casita, the second stay in the bunkhouse which is awesome for us. That way we can be close to the two horses we bring with us!

I just want to thank you so much for a great stay at Xanadu last week, it was awesome! We felt right at home and we really enjoyed meeting you all and were sorry we never got to share a bottle of wine with you on the patio. We did enjoy the fish though…Karen, hope you have fed them since we were there…we were hoping for the temp to reach 54 degrees so we could watch them eat. Great place you have and we look forward to staying with you again in the future…I am definitely going to try and get a group to come back for horseback riding, wine tasting and relaxing! "Christmas at Xanadu" 1/5/2010

Our stay at the Xanadu with Karen and Bernie was perfect! Truly a place of beauty, luxury and contentment. The scenery was subtly spectacular. The horseback riding and trails some of the very best i have ever been on. Our riding hosts Bernie of Xanadu and Bonnie of Amazing Western Trail Rides were knowledgeable and very safety conscious guides, showing us some of the most beautiful trails and vistas in the state of Arizona, and sharing some of the local history. Karen our host at Xanadu was perfect, always friendly, smiling and helpful! There was so many fun activities to do in the area with the wineries, Tombstone, and Bisbee to name a few. I could go on and on, we truly had the time of our lives! Cannot wait to go back!! Kathy from Apache Junction

"2 Stays and Planning our Third!" 1/23/2010

Stayed On: 9/2009

We so enjoyed our two stays at Xanadu Ranch! The Innkeepers, Bernie and Karen, work hard to make your stay perfect. It is a very pleasant balance of service and privacy! The location is stunning, with views of fields and mountains in every direction. The rooms are great, but there are plenty of places outdoors to relax, including seating areas, a koi pond, and even a hammock stretched between two shady trees. Xanadu is close to SE Arizona Wine Country, and some nice restaurants (although you can use the kitchen or gas grills and make your own as well!) We look forward to our next visit! C and D from Scottsdale

As a New Yorker I was wary of going to Xanadu "in the middle of nowhere", as I thought of it. But upon arrival I was made to feel so much at home that I completely fell in love with Sonoita. This happiness continued all during my stay due to Bernie and Karen's helpful and kind responsiveness to all my queries and requests.
I recommend this beautiful place to everyone, especially cityslickers like me who fear to tread into the big open desert. You'll have a wonderful time at Xanadu for the price slightly above a rush hour taxi ride from midtown to JFK!
Happy trails to you,

Karen and Bernie are amazing - they are obviously doing what they love in a place they know is special, and they go above and beyond to make sure you have an enjoyable, relazing visit. Their concern for your well being stems beyond their gates as well, which is rare these days. The energy is positive and palpable, the site silent and serene, the hosts accommodating and just plain good people. We began planning our return before we left, and are bringing more people to share the experiene with. Enjoy your visit!

The only way to GO! Daily Tucson Airport Shuttle from Sierra Vista! "Excellent Experience" I cannot express enough what a top-notch outfit Arizona Sunshine Tours is. I had the pleasure of using them on a recent business trip to Sonoita. In the past I have tried two other shuttle services but Arizona Sunshine Tours really takes the cake. Kind and knowledgeable drivers – so well versed i...n the rich history of Arizona it felt like my trip to the fabulous Xanadu Ranch B&B was sort of like a mini Arizona tour they’re so famous for! No wonder this is why Xanadu recommended these folks. For anyone coming to Arizona for business or pleasure, save yourself the hassle with any other shuttle services and go with this one, you’ll not regret it. ~ Jennifer Ohman, San Diego ...Thank you! We spent 2 days here, 3/3-4, after having been here a year earlier. Bernie and Karen have done a wonderful job in making each room really special. We were in Rm. #2 and had everything we would want or need provided - we brought our own food for one meal, and used the microwave to re-heat, plus there utensils, plates, etc. The drive into Sonoita takes about 5 min., and if you choose, you can eat at one of several restaurants there. The room was immaculately clean. We love this place because of the quiet and solitude, but it caters mostly to "horsey" people, so this is another aspect which we enjoy also. Thank you Karen and Bernie for developing such a wonderful relaxing spot ..------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi guys
thanks again for your hospitality and concern for our wellbeing.
We had two fun days in Tombstone and a very easy ride to Benson today. (my Achilles tendon is very grateful for a days rest!)
Tomorrow we are planning to visit the Kartchner caverns and have decided to rent a car to get back to Tucson rather than cycle 50 miles on I 10.
I will send a few photos, including you guys and our reluctant friend Jake!
Incidentally in the past few years I have used Tripadvisor to help pick accomodations and I plan to submit a review remarking on how gracious you were as hosts.

We have had two great stays at Xanadu. First in a casita, the second stay in the bunkhouse which is awesome for us. That way we can be close to the two horses we bring with us!

Hi, Karen -
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the ranch. We came home rested and refreshed - the family time away was much needed! And we especially enjoyed having our beloved Libby along. She had a great time on her first real excursion away from home.
Thanks for the hospitality and for filling us in on the area. Eric was quite taken with the terrain and views down there. And such great sunsets! We will be back for winery visits next time.
All the best to you in the New Year,

We stayed in Rm. 2 .. with dog. All was perfect ! Not only the room, but the lovely patio/yard area in back, with outstanding views of all the surrounding hillsides and mountains. It was VERY quiet and peaceful. We didn't go for the horse experience, but they are certainly set up for that . Karen and Bernie could not have been any more helpful . We will go back ! “One Night is Not Enough”
Xanadu Ranch GetAway Guest Ranch / Hybrid B&B & Horse Motel

Tonio K 1 contribution Morristown, New Jersey
Our plans had us staying a single night here. That was to our regret, as we barely had time to enjoy the ambiance of the location and Karen and Bernie's hospitality. If you are interested in southern Arizona wine country, equestrian activities, birding, or a quick and out-of-the-ordinary getaway from the hustle and bustle of Tucson or Phoenix or southern California, give serious consideration to spending two or more nights here. One night simply won't do.

Unique and charming, yet Bernie and Karen will do whatever possible to meet the needs of virtually any traveler. Unless you have a genuine antipathy to horses, dogs, and wide open spaces, we recommend a stay here, even if you need to travel out of your way to get here.

“Relax under the stars”
CimarronJ 1 contribution Tucson

The Xanadu Guest Ranch is located in gorgeous high Sonoran Desert country, surrounded by ranches and hills and distant mountains. The ranch itself, originally built in 1911, is comprised of a main house and guests quarters on horse friendly property. Bernie and Karen are warm and friendly and go out of their way to make sure you have as relaxing a stay as possible. There is a gurgling koi stocked fishpool to stretch out next to in deck chairs, or you can swing in the hammock, listening to the wind in the trees. The rooms are tidy and spacious and outfitted with everything you'll need. There is a snack shack in the main building stocking cereal, yogurt, fruit, and also delicious mangosteen juice among other things for purchase. Near the inn, in Sonoita, is the Stakeout, a fine western style restaurant where you'll get one of the best margaritas in the region!

At night, walk out under a panoply of dazzling stars and listen to coyotes singing.

Also don't miss the Sonoita Vineyard, a 20 minute drive away from Xanadu, where you can taste and purchase fine table wines. .
We had a truly wonderful stay and can't wait to go back!

“Finally, a place to RELAX...”

BrewersTucson 7 contributions
Tucson

The Xanadu Ranch is located on a beautiful, rolling-grassland ranch around a mile south of the crossroads of Sonoita. It is smack in the middle of Arizona wine country and practically within a stone throw of the fairgrounds, some small shops, and a few good restaurants. It’s a perfect place to relax and unwind while enjoying life’s simple pleasures.

Karen and Bernie are the perfect hosts. They are friendly and their ability to make you feel comfortable appear effortless; they seem to really enjoy what they do. They offer a hybrid B and B experience; you have the choice to order a continental breakfast basket to enjoy in your room or in one of their outdoor sitting areas (which include a patio with a table, hammock, and beautiful views of the mountains, or an area with a soothing Koi pond and equally beautiful vistas).

We stayed in the casita which was extremely cozy and also had great views (especially out the large kitchen window). The bed was comfy and the kitchen was appointed with a small refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee maker. We enjoyed getting up in the morning, making a pot of coffee, and enjoying it in both our room and out on the patio while chatting with Karen, or Bernie, or other guests, or just vegging out by ourselves while spotting gigantic jackrabbits and other wildlife.

This was the first trip in a long time where my husband and I actually felt relaxed. Aside from attending horse races one day at the fairgrounds and having a couple nice suppers at two of the local restaurants, we decided not to do a most of things on our hypothetical activities list (like wine tasting or fishing in one of the nearby lakes) and simply enjoyed the peace and quiet. We didn’t want to leave. We will definitely stay at the Xanadu Ranch again (we’re just looking for a reason now). Thanks Karen and Bernie!

I had a wonderful stay at the Xanadu. Bernie and Karen are very friendly, welcoming hosts who are always available if needed. The rooms are airy and comfortable with lots of ammenities (microwave, fridge, Satellite TV, wifi) and above all - clean. The property is beautiful with spectacular views and a short distance from town. I was out most of the day, but so looked forward to my return in the evenings, greeted by their two horses and Jake the dog. I enjoyed my stay so much, I am heading back in September..

Xanadu was all we expected and more. Quiet, peaceful and so comfortable. All the amenities we could have hoped for.
We stayed with another couple, each with our own room yet close enough to enjoy our weekend together. It was their first experience with a bed and breakfast and it won't be their last! Bernie and Karen were the perfect hosts. Welcoming yet unobtrusive. We have stayed at many B&B's and this is one of the best.

After a 50 mile up hill bike ride from Tucson to Sonoita, it was like the prize at the finish line. Bernie and Karen welcomed us as we walked our bikes up the driveway for the 2nd time this year. They knew we were over tired, so they told us to take their jeep to dinner before we even checked in. How over and above was that?!! We had a wonderful dinner down the road and then came back to sit under the stars and hear nothing but silence.

The next morning, we rode down for breakfast, but nothing was open, so rode back to get what we normally eat anyway...fruit, yogurt, and oatmeal...right from their own snack shack! They keep juices, fruits, crackers and many items right there for you to help yourself to. We laughed as we sat on the patio looking out over the ranch and at the mountains, next to the fish pond they made, and wondered why we waste our energy going anywhere else. They have it all at the Xanadu. Relaxing vacation at its best....and a million miles of the best cycling you can imagine!

The owners of Xanadu Ranch do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable, and they succeed! As a bonus, rooms are spacious and enjoy lovely views of the grasslands and distant mountains. The ranch caters to horses too - the owners encourage owners to trailer down with their horses; the ranch provides "b&b" services for them. For people, however, this is not a typical b&b in that no complementary breakfast is provided, but a continental breakfast basket can be ordered at an additional daily cost.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for getting us in at the last minute on 2/8.

The accomodations were delightful, and we look forward to perhaps coming back sometime, and certainly to telling others about Xanadu.

It being the digital age, I would appreciate it if my email address stays with you/is not passed on. Also, as much as Tucson and points south of there will always be home for me, we're probably not high frequency repeat customers, although I have already and will again mention you all fondly to friends. As a former small business owner, I understand that communicating with potential customers takes scarce effort and dollars, so sending us promotional items is probably time better spent in other directions.

Still, we enjoyed your hospitality very much, and wanted to say "Thanks again". Sean

Hi Karen & Bernie,
My sister Becky and I stayed in room 3 on the 18th of this month, and you had mentioned that if we emailed you, we could request a copy of the picture you took in front of the jeep in the morning. So, here’s my request Thanks very much!
We really enjoyed the short stay, you two have a beautiful ranch; a great view and you make people feel they are right at home. Loved the idea of the honor system on the snacks, very reasonably priced also! Loved your horses, even if one of them likes to lie down every so often – that’s definitely reflective of your safe, relaxing atmosphere! Thanks very much for fitting us in that night at the last minute, we really appreciated it!
Best wishes!

Karen and Bernie, Kathryn and I enjoyed our stay with you and Jake this past July 4th /09 weekend. After telling our friends, old folks too, about your place, we've decided we'd like to reserve all four rooms for the Kentucky Derby race weekend next year. I believe that is April 30 and May 1, 2010. Some of us should still be around by now. Anyway, we would probably grill at the ranch on Friday night, have too much to drink and no doubt be in bed asleep by 930 pm. Saturday we'd go to the races, hit the local night clubs, and, no doubt, that evening be in bed oh, say by 830 pm.
In the snack room, no health foods, no tofu, no sugar free stuff. Let us know. Mike & Kathryn Cummings

Thanks in advance for the picture you took of us. It will be a nice photo to add to the rest of our photos of our time down their. Hope you are both well and I am sure I will see you again some day.

Weekend Working Getaway
Since I was going to be at the winery last Friday night and early Saturday morning helping get ready for the festival, I thought it would make sense to stay down there instead of making the extra commute home to Tucson for the night. My parents are kind enough to save me from sleeping on the winery floor and offered to put me up in a B&B in the area. They've done this before, and it's a treat for me to stay in peaceful, beautiful Sonoita and to check out the B&Bs. Before our grand opening day I spent a lovely night at the Sonoita Inn. This time I opted for Xanadu Ranch.

Bernie and Karen Kauk own and operate Xanadu Ranch, a charming B&B housed in a historic house with tile floors, comfortable furniture, and spectacular views in all directions. Xanadu Ranch is perfectly situated just a few minutes' drive from the Sonoita Crossroads, but almost a mile off of highway 83 so that it is perfectly peaceful there, the only sound at night the trickle of the fountain into the koi pond in the courtyard.

I could have stayed much longer, but it was off to work for me. Later Bernie and Karen stopped by Canelo Hills to check out the Wine & Farm Festival, and they brought their dog Jake. Bernie and Karen have been active in promoting the Sonoita-Elgin area and in bringing more people down to spend time in the wineries, restaurants, and B&Bs. We're glad to have such creative and dedicated neighbors!

My husband and I stayed at Xanadu with a couple friends for one night. We did a bike tour of the Sonoita/Elgin wineries - a blast! Xanadu was the perfect resting place after our long ride. We stayed in room #2, which had everything we needed including a small fridge, microwave, dishes, etc. We brought food along and had a picnic dinner on the patio next to the koi pond. The views of the surrounding mountains were great and, later at night, the stars were absolutely amazing. I've never seen so many! Karen and Bernie were extremely friendly and helpful in every step of the way - from making the reservation, getting winery information, offering suggestions for restaurants and hiking trails, and even giving us their phone # and offering to pick us up if we got too tired during our wine ride! Our friends brought their 3 dogs along to the ranch and it worked out great for them. This getaway was simple, but one of our favorites. I would definitely recommend to others and plan on returning.

Karen and Bernie have thought of everything, including all the "little things" that made my stay comfortable and easy. I was greeted by big welcoming smiles, and a well-appointed room with micro, fridge, coffee machine, satellite TV and Wireless!!! Outside my window, the sounds of a small waterfall in a Koi pond, and vistas of horse pastures, desert and mountains. They've created several different seating areas located near your door, where you can go to simply sit and reflect, or eat a picnic, or a sip a glass of wine with the stars and moon. As if this all isn't enough, they keep a small "self serve" pantry (payment on the honor system) that has every kind of snack - both the healthy ones, as well as lots of chips, crackers and chocolate! If you want a place where you can go to just "BE", this is certainly a wonderful retreat.

If you have been a reader of LSC then you might remember that we ventured down to Sonoita before. We knew what we were getting into this time so we brought reinforcements with us, Making this the first official LSC roadtrip. We had enough couples to rent all four Rooms at our unofficial southern home away from home Xanadu Ranch Getaway B&B.
The last time we went to Xanadu we did not make our way the main patio.
We were in the Bunkhouse which has it own porches and we stayed put. Our mistake. This time we had the run of the place and spent more time in the patio then anywhere
Else over the weekend. And why wouldn’t you? With grills, pavilions, seating for twenty, Beautiful views of Wrightson Peak and a koi pond filled with man-eating fish there really isn’t a good reason to go anywhere else.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were just down in Sonoita for a field trial and stayed at a lovely B/B called the Xanadu Guest Ranch. It was only 6 miles from the Las Cienegas Field Trial. Highly suggest it to any of your future Hunt Test or Field Trialers from out of town. I noticed on the AKC web site you have a Hunt Test coming up after the February 28th, 2010. Just thought I would share the info.

I attended a week-long clinic in Sonoita and the Xanadu couldn't have suited my needs better! I needed wifi Internet and a kitchen--what I got far exceeded that. The room (#1) was as spacious as a small house and the views were spectacular. The place was furnished impeccably and tidied daily with painstaking care. It was truly a peaceful, soothing, and lovely getaway for this solo traveler. I shall return--with my horse!
